Church history has shown "overcompensation" when dealing with error in the church. Luther expressed the reality of the danger by saying "church history is like a drunk on a horse".
Dr. Michael Haykin gave us a look at church history concerning the origin of "hyper-Calvinism" with a specific focus on John Gill and his contributions both positive and negative.
Jonathan Sims (Jono) preached second on "urging all to repent & believe" from Acts 17:30. He drove home the points that we urge all to repent & believe because:
1. All men are ignorant.
2. God Himself commands all men to repent.
3. All men will one day face the judgment of God.
4. Some will repent and believe.
5. This IS our calling!
At the third session Pastor Jeff Noblit covered the "use of altar calls". Brother Jeff distinguished "old time religion" from a "new fad", then covered the consequences of altar calls, and finally showed us "what sayeth the scriptures" concerning altar calls. We found out they just aren't in there!
More to come tonight and tomorrow ... God bless.
Sounds like a great conference. I really appreciated the wisdom spoken on "overcompensation". I want to focus on the truth of God's Word and let it do its sanctify work in my life and the life of the Body. Thanks for the post Anthony. Miss you and hope to see you Sunday!
